Story Telling Sunday - Swimwear

Today story was sparked off by Sian the other day when she said about having to go home in a borrowed pair of somebody else's big purple pants.

When I was very little I was evacuated to Worthing with my Mother and baby brother. We were made so welcome there that after the war we would go back to the same address for our holidays. I was about 5 and my brother about 2 and because it was just after the war probably 1946 and things were hard to get hold of we didn't have bathing costumes but I remember these plastic pants
I do truly remember them they were bright orange I remember my mother taking off our liberty bodices and telling us if we were cold to come straight out of the water but I was desperate to get into the sea so although it looks as though I am shivering I wasn't going to tell her how cold I felt.
I did a layout with this photo a few years ago

For more stories why not pop over to Sian's place

My two would swim in the ocean in the middle of winter - there is something so enticing about the sea that makes children immune to the cold I am sure!

I love - so much - how you tell your stories. And, goodness, I remember those plastic pants! My Mum used to use them on top of my brother's cloth nappies. They used to squeak so much, I always knew when he was toddling near me!

I just love old photographs, I have some similar to that although I never had the orange pants. I had a woolen bathing costume that stretched...

Great picture. what a shame they didn't have colour film then so we could see your orange pants in all their glory!

Actually I think it's probably a good thing we can't see how orange they were - great memories Mary wonderfully told.

Love how you have told this story and have such great photographs too. I remember my mum knitted me a swimsuit. It was so heavy when wet, I struggled to get out of the sea. Thanks for stirring the memory.

Children definitely don't feel the cold of the sea like us adults do! I have trouble getting in the sea around England past my ankles and yet you see children up to their necks and refusing to get out. Lovely story and fantastic photos.

My grandmother always loved Worthing so we often went on day trips with her. I do not recall anyone wearing plastic orange pants though, how funny!

Love the picture and story - my sister was like that. She wouldn't come out of the water till you practically had to drag her out.

The idea of the plastic pants made me laugh! I was, and still am, a complete water baby so I understand completely.
Thanks for sharing!

Funny that you remember that they were bright orange. I have a friend who is scrapping photos from this era and she keeps using beige and brown papers so they feel more 'heritage'. I keep telling her to use colour as there would have been lots of colour in the photo if it wasn't B&W. I love that your page incorporated orange and bright colours. It helps tell the story and completely sets the mood.

A place for me to put the pictures of layouts I have done that I am pleased with, to put in the poems I write and to add snippets of things that have caught my eye
