Story Telling Sunday

Hi Blogging Friends its Story Telling time again. Why not pop over to Sian's blog to find all those taking part.

As is my usual way, I have delved into my past and remembered an incident from when I was very young.
I was born at the beginning of ww2 and in a time of food rationing, sugar was particularly scarce, and remained so for quite a few years after the war.
Somehow my mother had got hold of some lump sugar, not the neat little cubes we see now but big irregular shapes, it was probably preserving sugar. She hid it at the back of the sideboard in the front room, we didn't often use this room so she thought it was safe.
I must have been about 6 or 7 and my brother 3 years younger. We discovered the sugary goodness and of course had to have a bit.
I would go back at regular intervals, over several weeks, and help myself to a lump, not knowing that my brother was doing the same. I suppose we thought just one lump didn't matter, no one would miss one lump.
You can imagine what happened. Mum came to use the sugar and by that time there was a big dent in the amount.
We got such a telling off and I felt so very very guilty, I knew that what I had done was wrong and promised never never to do anything like that again.

I remember when the sugar came in the little square lumps.....and we were given a lump as a treat if we were very good.....not something you'd do today!!!

Hi Mary, it's great to see you back for another Storytelling Sunday with the kind of nostalgic tale I love so much. I can just imagine you delighted to taste that sweetness, innocently imagining you wouldn't be discovered! Wonderful story. Thank you.

LOL at the two of you taking just a little bit, and just a little bit more, until you were discovered! Great tale Mary - TFS

How funny, neither of you realising what the other one was doing, your mum must have been pretty surprised when she went to use it. I can remember when you used to get a bowl of sugar cubes on cafe tables, and used to love to sneak one into my mouth when no one was watching!

my mum is a war baby which is perhaps why she scoffs sugar lumps in cafes when she sees them. it's so embarrassing. when we were little she would put some in her bag to take home,

I have sugar lumps! I don't eat them tho! Great tale, so typical of children thinking noone will notice!

My siblings and I used to do things like that - though, it wasn't as significant as eating our way through a war time ration!

We had those cubes at church when I was a kid and I snuck them every now and then too :) that was a great story, thanks for sharing it :)

What a sweet story Mary and how much trouble you must have been in!
Sorry, I managed to miss you (and 2 others) somehow yesterday.

Love how you tell your stories, Mary :)

A place for me to put the pictures of layouts I have done that I am pleased with, to put in the poems I write and to add snippets of things that have caught my eye
